TeslaCam & built in car cameras as 360 Dashcams?

Some vehicle manufacturers have a camera in certain car models and this raises question as to why you would have a third party Dashcam system. Tesla have released cars that have cameras with their prime function to aid in autonomous driving. But, with software updates they have enabled a restricted "dashcam" feature. You can find instructions at the end of this post to help you configure your built in Teslacams if your vehicle meets the hardware requirements.

Blackvue and Goluk are able to provide enhanced purpose built dashcams to cover wide front and rear views for incidents whilst driving and parked. With Goluk cameras being modular, you can have as many cameras installed as you wish and we have installed up to 5 cameras in vehicles to give enhanced coverage.

This Tesla Model S with AP2 (8 autopilot cameras) has added 4 x Goluk Dashcams. 1 x front facing T2 and 3 x side and rear facing T3's. Each camera having over 142 degrees of cover, easily exceeding 360 degrees of view.

Should any incident occur whilst driving or parked, it will be captured by different angles at the same time. Due to the full 1080p high resolution high bitrate cameras, insurance companies have no problem with reviewing the clear footage and defending their customer.

How to setup Tesla cameras as dashcam

You will need:

  • Hardware version 2.5, this is any Tesla built from August 2017 onwards.

  • a FAST good quality USB 3.0 stick with at least 1.8 GB Formatted to Fat 32. Each minute of video uses approximately 32 MB. Tesla owners are using these from Amazon

Create a root folder named ‘TeslaCam‘ on the USB stick. Plug it into the front USB port in your Tesla. The V9 Tesla dash cam feature is a very basic system. It uses the forward facing and side cameras on the car while the car is on. It is constantly recording everything and cycles an hour of footage. There is no need to toggle anything on or off, just tap the camera icon to save the previous 10 minutes of driving. Pressing the save button just puts the footage aside from the deletion cycle.

The Teslacam is "ok" as a free system but due to its restricted features, you certainly should not rely on this as a primary dashcam for your car. The quality isn’t as good as a £500 dashcam system and the Front camera field of view is only 50 degrees at 150mtrs with video resolution of only 1280x960 as oppose to our minimum recommendations of 152 deg FOV with at least 1920x1080 resolution.

Whenever you wish to view the recordings you will need to take out the USB stick and put it into a pc or mac to view the recordings.
