My Teslacam dashcam has failed yet again, seems to be a trend in the past few days on facebook forums.
Unfortunately when you buy a nice new Tesla, dashcams might be on the bottom of the list when it comes to those exciting accessories you want for your new toy.
When in reality, a dashcam install should be the first thing on your mind to protect that expensive asset.
Tesla cameras were not designed as a dashcam function and they were an afterthought. A software upgrade enabled some of the camera data streams to be recorded, if you had a specific USB memory stick, formatted it in a certain way, and kept good housekeeping on it.
Formatting regularly and regular checks are required to ensure its working as it should.
The fact that the cameras have been enabled is great, they're a good free addition to a professionally installed dashcam like Blackvue, Thinkware or Goluk. But to have them on their own is probably not a wise idea at this moment.
We would certainly recommend enabling them whilst driving as the side view cameras are ok. But the front camera has a very narrow field of view and it also has a longer focal point when in fact you need the opposite, a wide angled field of view and a shorter focal point.
